Infants born more than one week past their due dates have a higher risk of both impaired health and death, according to two new studies by authors from the University of California’s San Francisco and Berkeley campuses.
Far from the media eye, UCSF epidemiologist Joseph Wiemels, PhD, makes trips to Fallon, Nevada, a rural town of 8,000 about 60 miles east of Reno on a lonesome stretch of Highway 50, to investigate what he calls the most unusual concentration of residential childhood leukemia cases ever reported.

The American Heart Association has called for routine screening for depression in patients with heart disease, citing a depression rate that is three times higher than in the general population.
Public health experts will convene for a half-day conference to discuss the two Presidential candidates’ vastly differing suggestions for health care reform and assess the impact of each. The group will review the necessary elements of a reform and evaluate each plan from the perspective of women, low-income communities, public health advocates and health care providers. The meeting also will develop an action plan to inform California policymakers directly of the group’s views on reform proposals that promote health and wellness, and public health policies and programs.
