<p>The first U.S. meeting of the International AIDS Conference in more than two decades will be held later this month in Washington, DC, and Bay Area reporters got a preview of what UCSF researchers will present when they convene at the nation's capitol.</p>
<p>A declaration calling for global support to end the AIDS epidemic was announced on July 10 by the International AIDS Society, with key support from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).</p>
Scientists at the UCSF-affiliated Gladstone Institutes have discovered that environmental factors critically influence the growth of a type of stem cell — called an iPS cell — that is derived from adult skin cells.
<p>Experts at UCSF say the historic U.S. Supreme Court ruling on President Obama’s health care law has the potential to significantly improve the nation's health and the education of future health professionals.</p>
<p>An aspiration of UCSF faculty and campus leaders is that the students trained here continue to transform biomedicine through innovation and risk taking, a theme highlighted by Marc Tessier-Lavigne, PhD, president at Rockefeller University, who delivered the 2012 Graduate Division commencement speech on May 18.</p>
<p>The UCSF School of Medicine congratulated students on May 11 for their success in graduating from one of the best medical schools in the country.</p>

<p>UCSF Chancellor Susan Desmond-Hellmann ushered in the start of the 2012 commencement season by giving a speech on April 24. Here is the transcript from that speech.</p>
<p>Chancellor Susan Desmond-Hellmann received a standing ovation on April 19 after sharing a heart-felt story about her life and lessons learned to students, faculty, staff and alumni gathered to hear what was billed as UCSF's inaugural “Last Lecture.”</p>
<p>If the U.S Supreme Court allows for the ongoing expansion and adoption of national health care reform, it will mean a greater role for family medicine practitioners as the previously uninsured seek primary care physicians to gain access to the health care system.</p>
<p>UCSF medical students participated with their peers around the country in the annual rite of passage known as Match Day, when they found out which residency program they have been assigned and where they will work.</p>
<p>UCSF has named Elizabeth Watkins, director of graduate studies for the History of Health Sciences program and a professor in the Department of Anthropology, History and Social Medicine, dean of the Graduate Division.</p>
<p>As physicians working on the frontlines of HIV/AIDS since its start 30 years ago near retirement, UCSF is looking to attract and train the next generation of doctors to specialize in HIV/AIDS medicine.</p>
