Lustig’s research focuses on the regulation of energy balance by the central nervous system. He is currently investigating the contribution of nutritional, neural, hormonal and genetic influences in the expression of the current obesity epidemic both in children and adults. He is the author of many articles, chapters and reviews on obesity and was recently featured on CNN for his views on the toxicity of sugar. Lustig's 90-minute UCSF Mini Medical School lecture about sugar and obesity went viral on YouTube, which has more than 1.8 million views to date.

Christine Carter, PhD, a sociologist and executive director at UC Berkeley's Great Good Science Center, an interdisciplinary research unit dedicated to the psychology, sociology and neuroscience of well being, will deliver the lunchtime lecture, titled “Raising Happiness and Reducing Stress,” at 12:15 p.m. Drawing on what science has proven about confidence, gratefulness and optimism, Carter uses her own chaotic and often hilarious real-world adventures as a mom to demonstrate how to live well. She has been seen on Oprah, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and NPR for her book, "Raising Happiness: Ten Simple Steps for More Joyful Kids and Happier Parents." The first 60 attendees will receive a free book.

In an effort to reach as many UCSF faculty, staff, and students as possible, UCSF will have expanded activities across nine different campus locations over two weeks in January. Please find the full schedule of expo events at each location here  .

Living Well at UCSF is the Chancellor’s health and wellness initiative designed to support the campus community’s health and well-being and improve the quality of life of people at UCSF.
