Media Advisory: NFL Stars to Present $2.5 Million Check for Brain Tumor Research

WHAT: Media are invited to cover a ceremonial check presentation at a reception before San Francisco’s opening night of Billy Elliot the Musical.

At the reception, former NFL player Harris Barton will present a $2.5 million check on behalf of Champion Charities to Dr. Michael Prados of the University of California, San Francisco’s Brain Tumor Research Center, to support its mission to eradicate brain disease. The gift will fund laboratory space in the Helen Diller Family Cancer Research Building, translational research in brain tumors and patient care for pediatric and adult brain tumor patients at UCSF Medical Center.

WHO:

  • Harris Barton, former NFL pro bowl offensive tackle for the San Francisco 49ers.
  • Champion Charities, a not-for-profit organization established by Barton and Lott with a mission of raising funds to support  brain tumor research.
  • Michael Prados, MD, FACP, Professor in Residence of Neurological Surgery, Director of Translational Research in Neuro-Oncology and Principal Investigator in the Brain Tumor Research Center at UCSF.

The reception begins at 6 p.m., and the check presentation will begin at 7 p.m. with remarks by Barton followed by a short video presentation and the check presentation to Prados, who also will speak briefly about translational research and the importance of philanthropy in fighting brain cancer.
