UCSF School of Medicine Ranks in U.S. News Best Graduate Schools’ Top Five for Ten Years Running
For the 10th consecutive year, UC San Francisco’s School of Medicine placed in the top five nationally in the U.S. News & World Report survey of best graduate and professional schools.
UCSF was the only medical school to be ranked in the top five in the nation in both research and primary care, the categories the magazine uses to assess medical education, ranking fifth in biomedical research and third in primary care education.
UCSF was also the only medical school ranked in the top five in all eight of the specialty areas covered by the survey this year: third in anesthesiology, internal medicine, obstetrics & gynecology, and radiology; and fifth in pediatrics, psychiatry, surgery, and family medicine, a specialty ranked by U.S. News for the first time this year.
“At UCSF, the purpose of medical education is to empower learners to advance science and seek new ways to improve health care delivery in their communities and nationwide,” said Talmadge E. King Jr., MD, dean of the School of Medicine. “We are proud that for the 10th year in a row, we are the only medical school in the nation in the top ranks of both biomedical research and primary care education. This unique distinction reflects our success in creating an environment where students can individualize clinical and scientific learning to support their career path, whether as pioneering physician-scientists or as champions for the most vulnerable populations.”
The UCSF School of Nursing was ranked 18th overall among nursing master’s degree programs, out of more than 200 schools nationwide that offer nursing master’s programs.
“The School of Nursing has a proud and rich history of training the next generation of nurse leaders, and we consistently rank among the top nursing schools nationwide in competitive NIH research funding,” said Catherine L. Gilliss, PhD, RN, FAAN. “We are working to modernize our academic programs, increase enrollment and enhance our clinical integration – all of which we believe will lead to increased recognition of our academic excellence in the future.”

Graduate and professional education in the health sciences is one of UCSF’s core missions, said Chancellor Sam Hawgood, MBBS. “We take great pride in our role of educating the future doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, and scientists who will serve the Bay Area, state and nation, treating patients in need and solving urgent scientific and public health problems.”
The rankings are published in the magazine’s 2020 issue of “Best Graduate Schools.”
