UCSF Rallies Team in Final Days Before AIDS Walk San Francisco

By Lisa Cisneros

With 10 days to go before AIDS Walk San Francisco, UCSF is working to get members of the University community to sign up for or contribute to the annual fundraiser to support programs and services to treat and prevent HIV/AIDS.

UCSF is gearing up for AIDS Walk San Francisco on Sunday, July 21.

The event is slated for Sunday, July 21, in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.

"UC San Francisco's commitment to community is part of our DNA," says Barbara J. French, vice chancellor of University Relations. "As a leading university exclusively focused on health, UCSF has long confronted AIDS through our research, patient care activities and education of future health professionals. AIDS Walk San Francisco is a fun way to bring our faculty, staff and students together to take steps to eliminate this epidemic."

To date, UCSF's 13 teams have collected more than $32,000 in online donations. As in years past, the UCSF team that raises the most money wins the UCSF AIDS Walk Trophy, currently held by the UCSF Global Health Sciences team. So far this year, the Global Health Sciences team has joined forces with folks from the AIDS Research Institute and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, making it the big team to beat.

The UCSF AIDS Walk Steering Committee set an ambitious fundraising goal of $65,000 based on previous years' performances as one of AIDS Walk San Francisco's top-10 performing teams. Last year, UCSF collectively raised more than $56,000, becoming the second-highest fundraising institution in the walk.

"We usually get a late surge of donations during the final days leading up to AIDS Walk San Francisco, and we hope that we can again show UCSF's commitment to ending the AIDS epidemic," said Jennifer Mannix, co-chair of the UCSF AIDS Walk Steering Committee and manager of Arts and Events for Campus Life Services.
