Before You Vote, Meet State and City Candidates at UCSF-Sponsored Forums
With just over a month until the November election, UCSF is co-sponsoring a series of candidate forums for the California Assembly, California Senate and San Francisco Board of Supervisors.
As the second-largest employer in San Francisco, the University hosts the forums as a service to the communities surrounding its campuses and an opportunity for civic involvement for its faculty, staff and students who live in the area.
San Francisco Supervisorial District 7
Monday, Sept. 24, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., UCSF’s Cole Hall, 513 Parnassus Ave.
The first event will feature candidates for District 7, which covers neighborhoods west of Twin Peaks, San Francisco State University and Lake Merced area. Nine candidates are vying for the seat to replace Sean Elsberndt, who is termed out of office. KGO-TV anchor Cheryl Jennings will moderate the forum, presented by UCSF and the League of Women Voters of San Francisco, that will include Andrew Bley, F.X. Crowley, Joel Engardio, Michael Garcia, Lynn Gavin, Julian Lagos, Glenn Rogers, Robery Squeri and Norman Yee.
San Francisco Supervisorial District 5
Thursday, Sept. 27, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., UCSF’s Millberry Union, 500 Parnassus Ave.
Eight candidates for District 5 are running for the office to represent the Haight-Ashbury and Lower Haight neighborhoods as well as parts of Hayes Valley and Japantown. Incumbent Christina Olague, who was appointed to the seat by Mayor Ed Lee earlier this year after Ross Mirkarimi became sheriff, is speaking at the forum as well as challengers London Breed, Julian Davis, Daniel Everett, Hope Johnson, Andrew “Ellard” Resignato, John Rizzo and Thea Selby. In addition to UCSF, the League of Women Voters of San Francisco and University of California Hastings College of the Law are sponsoring the forum.
California Senate District 11 and California Assembly District 19
Wednesday, Oct. 3, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Koret Auditorium, San Francisco Main Public Library, 100 Larkin St.
State-level offices will be highlighted in back-to-back forums moderated by Jennifer Waggoner, president of the League of Women Voters of California. For the first hour, Republican Harmeet Dhillon will debate State Sen. Mark Leno, a Democrat who currently represents part of the newly formed Senate District 11 that covers San Francisco and parts of Daly City.
For the second hour, Democrats Michael Breyer and Phil Ting will discuss why they want to replace Fiona Ma, who is termed out of the Assembly District 19 (formerly District 12) office representing the western half of San Francisco and Daly City, Broadmoor and Colma in San Mateo County. The event is presented by UCSF, the League of Women Voters of San Francisco and the Junior League of San Francisco.
