Boyd Named Associate Vice Chancellor for Ethics and Compliance

Elizabeth Boyd, PhD, a preeminent bioethicist and medical sociologist, has been named as the associate vice chancellor for ethics and compliance, providing direction and oversight for the UCSF Ethics and Compliance Program.

Her appointment was announced on Wednesday by Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Jeffrey Bluestone, PhD, who said that in her new role, Boyd will “lead our compliance efforts while enhancing a culture at UCSF that promotes integrity and ethical behavior in areas including data privacy and security, governing laws, statutes and policies and compliance management.”

Previously, she served as assistant vice president for research compliance and policy at the University of Arizona where she oversaw the management of campus research compliance activities, including conflict of interest, the Institutional Review Boards , security, animal care, export control, laboratory safety, and research misconduct.

At UCSF, Boyd will articulate organizational objectives for ethics and compliance, working with campus leaders to assess needs and risks and to develop solutions to potential vulnerabilities. She also will address regulatory compliance matters, including data privacy and security issues, interpreting relevant laws, statutes and policies.

Boyd is a medical sociologist and bioethicist and has lectured nationally on conflicts of interest, ethical issues in clinical trials, responsible conduct of research, practice guideline development, peer review and publication ethics, and direct-to-consumer drug marketing. She has also served as a consultant to many policy groups, including the Institute of Medicine, the National Institutes of Health Office of Research Integrity joint program in research integrity, and the World Health Organization.

This position brings Boyd back to UCSF, where she received her postdoctoral training at the Institute for Health Policy Studies and served as adjunct faculty in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy for five years.

Boyd received her BA degree in psychology from University of California, Berkeley and an MA degree in communication from Stanford before earning her PhD degree in medical sociology from the University of California, Los Angeles.
