Hebrok Appointed Director of UCSF Diabetes Center

Matthias Hebrok, the Hurlbut-Johnson Distinguished Professor in Diabetes Research, has been appointed director of the UCSF Diabetes Center and Metabolic Research Unit.
The appointment is effective immediately, according to Sam Hawgood, MBBS, dean of the UCSF School of Medicine who made an announcement on June 3.
Hebrok is considered one of the world’s foremost experts on pancreatic development.
He joined the UCSF faculty in 1999 after completing his postdoctoral training as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute fellow under Douglas Melton, PhD, the Thomas Dudley Cabot Professor in the Natural Sciences at Harvard University and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
“I have the utmost confidence in Dr. Hebrok, both as a scientist and as the leader of the complex research programs at the Diabetes Center,” said Hawgood.
His graduate work took place at the Max-Planck Institute for Immunobiology in Freiburg, Germany. His research focuses on how undifferentiated epithelial cells develop into functional endocrine cells, specifically insulin-producing beta-cells.
Hebrok has served as the interim director of the Diabetes Center since March and also during the time when the previous director, now Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Jeffrey Bluestone, PhD, served as interim vice chancellor for research.
The UCSF Diabetes Center brings together a team of approximately 150 research faculty and staff members who conduct basic research to discover the underlying causes of diabetes and pursue the most innovative basic and clinical research to help prevent, treat and cure diabetes.
