Grant Supports UCSF Research in Lead Cause of Trauma Deaths

Mitchell Cohen, MD, UCSF assistant professor of surgery, has received a $225,000 research grant from the National Trauma Institute to investigate the timing and mechanism of traumatic coagulopathy. The grant will enable the research team to perform an observational study to determine the incidence and prevalence of clotting abnormalities in severely injured patients and study the complex biology of the proteins involved to better understand, predict, diagnose and treat bleeding after trauma. Uncontrolled hemorrhage is responsible for the majority of trauma-related deaths in the United States in the first 24 hours following injury. Cohen’s study is one of seven grants awarded this month by the non-profit organization.
