UCSF Director to Teach Course on Women and Leadership

Amy Levine, EdD, a longtime champion for women, will teach a new UC Berkeley Extension course this fall designed to provide practical information that will help participants advance their careers.

Executive director of the UCSF Center for Gender Equity, Levine is experienced in cultivating and developing the next generation of women leaders and is recognized for supporting women across the University. She has collaborated with her UC colleagues on numerous programs and initiatives to empower, enlighten and inspire women through professional development workshops, women’s health lectures and Kids at Work Day. In addition, Levine identifies, develops and advocates policies to increase the participation of women in higher-level staff and faculty positions, and advocates a supportive work environment at UCSF.

The new UC Berkeley Extension course, titled “Making Power Moves: Women and Leadership,” will cover topics including networking, the use of power, organizational politics, non-defensive communication, negotiation, public speaking, personal accountability and self-nurturing/limit setting.

Through lecture, discussion and interactive exercises, participants will learn skills that will help them excel in today’s highly competitive workplace and apply high standards of ethical practice and compassionate leadership.

Upon successful completion, participants will learn how to:

  • Navigate power relationships, hidden agendas, and organizational politics.
  • Express opinions with clarity and confidence and set boundaries
  • Assess the state of their networks to make connections that truly count
  • Prepare to negotiate, build your case, present your request and clinch the deal.
  • Develop a strategy for self coaching and coaching others
  • Discover how to rewire your brain from stress to well-being.

Levine is a member of the Women’s Leadership Board at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. In May, she was honored with the Outstanding Mentor Award from the Women of Color Action Network (WCAN). Levine also was named as one of the Women Who Make a Difference from the San Francisco chapter of the Commission on the Status of Women and received the UCSF Chancellor’s Award for the Advancement of Women for her work promoting gender equity.

Levine has a master’s degree in counseling psychology and a doctorate in education from UC Berkeley. She started her career at UCSF in 1979.

The course comprises 10 sessions on Thursdays, from Sept. 17 to Nov. 19, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., on the UC Berkeley campus, 175 Barrows Hall. To enroll, visit UC Berkeley Extension.
