UCSF sponsors special college planning event on June 9

Eighth-grade students and their parents are invited to a special college planning workshop and fair sponsored by UCSF on Saturday, June 9. All Bay Area families are invited to this free event. 

Designed to provide resources and encouragement to families unfamiliar with college preparation and admission procedures, the one-day event is titled “Plan on College!”  It will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the UCSF Mission Bay Campus, 1673 Owens Street in San Francisco (near the intersection of 3rd and 16th streets). 

Information sessions for parents will be conducted in English, Spanish, and Cantonese.

www.ucforyou.com or call 415-514-2132 for information. Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged to secure attendance.

The event will include presentations on the benefits of college, California’s higher-education systems, how to prepare a child for college, and how financial aid programs work.  There also will be information tables with professional representatives available to answer questions.

“It’s important to get students thinking about college as they enter high school. Current college entrance requirements call for students to make informed course choices beginning in ninth grade in order to be eligible by the time they graduate,” said Ignacio Andrade, college admissions counselor with the UCSF Center for Science and Education Opportunity, which is sponsoring the event.

The Center was founded in 1999 to encourage students from the Bay Area to pursue a college education.  The Center coordinates programs that help students explore their academic interest, prepare academically for college, learn how to apply to and finance college, and decide which colleges best fit their academic goals.
