By Phyllis Brown

Elena Fuentes-Afflick

Elena Fuentes-Afflick, MD, MPH, professor of pediatrics and epidemiology and biostatistics at UCSF, has been named editor of the "Perspectives" section of the journal Ambulatory Pediatrics, which focuses on reviews of important pediatric topics, with an emphasis on research findings in the previous five years and on identifying areas for future study. Authors featured in "Perspectives" generally are respected authorities in their field, and may include a fellow or junior faculty member as co-author. The manuscripts should be about 20 pages long, and include an overview of key questions, important, recent research in a field, recent advances in the underlying science, and finally some vision of the key research (or policy) needed in the next few years. Where appropriate, the manuscript should also discuss implications for pediatric education and practice. All "Perspectives" manuscripts will be peer-reviewed. Manuscripts generally are between 4,500 and 5,000 words - longer than the usual limit for a research manuscript. In most cases, the journal will solicit these perspectives, although authors wishing to propose one may contact the journal directly. Submissions to the "Perspectives" section will be administered through the usual journal submission website. Fuentes-Afflick completed her undergraduate and medical education at the University of Michigan. She completed her residency training at UCSF, where she also served as chief resident. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in health policy at UCSF, as well as her MPH degree at the University of California, Berkeley. She is a leading researcher in understanding ethnic disparities in health outcomes, immigrant health, Latino health and welfare reform. She currently is vice president of the Society for Pediatric Research, and has served on the editorial board of Ambulatory Pediatrics for the past year. Ambulatory Pediatrics is the official journal of the Ambulatory Pediatric Association (APA) and is published six times a year. Ambulatory Pediatrics provides a forum for interesting and cutting-edge work in academic general pediatrics. The journal focuses on the education of pediatricians, child health services research, emergency medicine, research methodology, complementary and alternative medicine, child health policy, informatics, and adolescent medicine.
