Amy Levine

Amy Levine, director of the UCSF Center for Gender Equity, has been appointed to a Presidential Staff Fellowship at the UC Office of the President (UCOP). Beginning Jan. 1, 2007, Levine will work in President Robert Dynes' immediate office, partnering with Associate President Linda Williams to implement a systemwide Creating Change Initiative to develop a strategic platform primarily focused on addressing the career advancement of the University's women staff. This work will build upon the success of the symposium, Women Leaders: A Symposium for Women in University Settings. Organized by Levine and other staff at UCSF, these symposia have helped UC women staff identify and overcome institutional and personal barriers to career opportunities and advancement since 1998. The symposia also offer valuable opportunities for staff to network with each other, as well as boost morale among participants. Levine will divide her time between this project at UCOP and her regular duties at UCSF, where she serves as director of the Center for Gender Equity. Levine is well-known at UCSF for her tireless efforts in cultivating and developing the next generation of women leaders and supporting women in general at UCSF. She has collaborated with her campus colleagues on numerous programs and initiatives to empower, enlighten and inspire women through professional development workshops, monthly women's health lectures and Kids at Work Day. In addition, Levine identifies, develops and advocates policies to increase the participation of women in higher-level staff and faculty positions, and advocates a supportive work environment at UCSF. "I am extremely grateful to President Dynes and Associate President Williams for presenting me with the opportunity to expand on my position at UCSF and reach employees throughout the UC system," Levine says. "I hope to build on best practices from each campus, while creating new initiatives to support the advancement of women staff." Levine came to UCSF in 1979 as the first coordinator of the Rape Prevention Education Program. In 1984, she was named the founding director of the UCSF Women's Resource Center and subsequently received her EdD degree from UC Berkeley. In 1998, Levine was appointed the founding director of the UCSF Center for Gender Equity. She has significant experience and expertise in addressing topics that affect women, including issues of ethnic diversity, sexual orientation and age, among others. For her creative and energetic leadership promoting gender equity, she received a Women Who Make a Difference Award from the San Francisco Commission on the Status of Women, and was the first staff recipient of the UCSF Chancellor's Award for the Advancement of Women. Levine serves on Harvard's Kennedy School of Government's Women's Leadership Board and on the board of the American Council on Education.
