UCSF Foundation Elects New Chair, Board Members
The UCSF Foundation has elected former banking executive Richard M. Rosenberg as its new chair and three community leaders as new board members. The UCSF Foundation is a nonprofit public benefit corporation established to advance the interests and promote the welfare of the University of California, San Francisco by raising funds to meet critical needs, sponsoring educational programs, and involving friends and supporters in the work of the University.
The foundation comprises about 80 members who are leaders in the community, the University and the alumni body. In recent years, UCSF has grown increasingly dependent on the Foundation to cultivate private support because only 9 percent of its operating budget comes from state sources.
Rosenberg is the retired chair and CEO of the Bank of America Corporation and Bank of America NT&SA. He has been a director of many companies and served on numerous nonprofit boards, including the California Institute of Technology, University of Southern California, San Francisco Symphony Association and United Way of the Bay Area. Rosenberg has a long association with UCSF that includes serving as chair of the foundation's audit and finance committees and as a member of the marketing committee. He also has been a member of the UCSF Medical Center Executive Council, which serves as a business advisory board for UCSF's clinical enterprise. He resides in San Francisco with his wife Barbara.
The new board members are:
Ron Conway: Founder and general partner of Angel Investors LP, Conway now invests on his own. He serves on UCLA's venture capital committee and served for 15 years on the board of directors of the Altos Foundation. He also has supported the Ronald McDonald House at Stanford and the Tiger Woods Foundation. He and his wife Gayle live in San Francisco and Palo Alto, and they have three sons.
Eve Epstein Jaffe: An active member of the UCSF Cancer Council, Jaffe helps to organize the fund-raising event "Raising Hope" and serves as a council subcommittee chair. A licensed clinical social worker, she worked in this role at UCSF for 12 years, serving her last year as a supervisor. During her tenure, she also served as a member of the UCSF ethics committee and was a repeat guest lecturer in the UCSF School of Medicine. She and her husband Ross Jaffe, MD, are on the advisory council for the Las Lomitas Education Foundation and are active supporters of the Menlo School. They reside in Atherton.
Steven Merrill: A native of San Francisco, Merrill currently is general partner of the investment partnership Merco Ventures. He previously served as president of BankAmerica Capital Corporation, founded the venture capital partnership Merrill, Pickard, Anderson & Eyre, and helped form Benchmark Capital and Foundation Capital. Merrill devotes time to several civic and nonprofit activities, with a primary focus on public education, health care and the environment. He is a board member of the Aspire Public Schools, NewSchools Venture Fund and Tahoe Regional Planning Agency. He resides in San Francisco and has two college-age sons.
