Philosopher to Offer "Compass for Healers" at UCSF
UCSF will present a four-part lecture and discussion series titled "A Compass for Healers," featuring Noah benShea, an internationally best-selling author and philosopher.
BenShea will visit UCSF to lead discussions on what he calls the four"internal compass points" to guide career and life: humility, honesty, love and faith.
He will address each of the four points, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., in this order:
• Humility, Wednesday, Oct. 19: School of Nursing, N 225
• Honesty, Monday, Nov. 14: School of Nursing, N 225
• Love, Monday, Jan. 10, 2006, School of Nursing, room 217, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
• Faith, Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006.
(Location for this last lecture have yet to be determined.) Presented by the Students for Exploration of Self, these talks will provide students, faculty and staff with insights and tools to help them face demands of school, career and family. Dinner will be provided. A terrific speaker, benShea has been called the "Zen Mark Twain" by TV legend Larry King. His insights have made a profound difference for people around the world. He was recently named "Philosopher in Residence" for the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara and he is the national laureate of the ALS Association. "We believe that this lecture series will provide students and faculty from around UCSF with a unique opportunity to come together, and to support and learn from one another in an open dialogue," says event organizer Zadok Sacks, a second-year medical student and friend of benShea. Co-sponsors for this series include the Integrative Medicine Network, UCSF School of Medicine Advisory College Mentors, UCSF School of Pharmacy, the Landberg Center, Supportive Work Environment, the Student Activity Center and the Chancellor's Endowment Fund.
