Battle for AIDS Walk Trophy in Final Stretch
Time is running out for UCSF teams to sign up to walk in the first-ever competition for the UCSF AIDS Walk San Francisco Trophy.
The campus community can help make the walk this Sunday, July 17 a success either by walking through Golden Gate Park or by sponsoring a colleague on the team of their choice.
This year, eight teams from UCSF are vying for what will likely be a yearly coveted prize -- the bronzed running shoe formerly worn by UCSF Chancellor Mike Bishop. The trophy is currently on display in the Chancellor's Office.
Funds raised by the AIDS Walk benefit the San Francisco AIDS Foundation as well as numerous Bay Area organizations, which provide health care and other services for those living with HIV disease.
The UCSF team that registers the most participants based on the percentage of total faculty, staff, students, residents and postdocs, will bring home the bronze and have bragging rights for a year.
According to team statistics posted on the official event website, UCSF Medical Center and the UCSF School of Medicine are signing up the most participants. As such, the contest is too close to call.
To see the current list of registered walkers and money raised so far, go to the AIDS Walk website.
The prize for the individual walker who raises the most money is a brand new Apple IBOOK G4 portable with built in wireless. The high-tech prize is being donated for the good cause by Campus Life Services, according to Keith Braxton, a director in Campus Life Services.
We want to support campuswide participation in the 2005 AIDS Walk," says Braxton, who gave the listed price of the computer at nearly $1,000.
Many walkers have yet to post their pledges so it may take some time to determine who the top fundraiser will be as the standings could easily change.
