UCSF Names New Deputy Campus Counsel
Greta W. Schnetzler, a San Francisco attorney who specializes in representing institutions of higher learning, has been named the new Deputy Campus Counsel in the UCSF Office of Legal Affairs.
UCSF Chief Campus Counsel Marcia J. Canning announced the appointment, which became effective on March 1.
Schnetzler, a partner in the Gordon & Rees law firm from 1998 to 2005, has had extensive experience working with academic institutions including Stanford University, St. Mary's College, California State University and the University of California. She worked as an associate with that firm from 1985 to 1998.
"It's really an exciting time to be part of UCSF," Schnetzler said during a recent interview. "UCSF continues to be on the cutting-edge of health sciences."
Schnetzler has worked as a litigator and legal advisor. She has trained as a mediator and neutral evaluator and provides these services as a volunteer to the Northern District Courts' Alternative Dispute Resolution Program.
At UCSF, Schnetzler will assist with employment issues for faculty and staff, as well as issues involving residents, fellows and students. She also will be working with the campus Committee on Human Research and handling compliance and medical staff issues as well as certain contract and business transactions.
A 20-year resident of San Francisco, Schnetzler lives on Potrero Hill with her four-year-old son and husband, who is a consulting geologist with his own software company.
"With the expansion at UCSF Mission Bay, it's really a wonderful opportunity to join an institution that is right in my own neighborhood."
Schnetzler earned her JD in 1985 from Vanderbilt University, where she graduated in the top one-third of her class. She earned her BS at the University of Alabama, where she majored in English and political science and graduated magna cum laude.
She is a member of the National Association of Colleges and University Attorneys, the Defense Research Institute, the Association of Defense Counsel, the Employment Law Section of the State Bar of California and the Bar Association of San Francisco.
