“I dream of a future when a young, black girl who’s born in Bayview-Hunters Point, East or West Oakland, or the Iron Triangle in Richmond has the same life expectancy, expectations for her truth, and sense of possibility as a white girl who grows up in the Oakland Hills, San Francisco’s Richmond District, or Nob Hill.⠀ .⠀ I hope that [in 2050] UCSF will be able to look back and say that we were responsive to the needs of the most underserved and under-resourced communities, and that we were a catalyst for changing the corporate culture of the Bay Area. But I spent hours playing, escaping to a world of my own imagining, relying on loving and responsive parents who created a safe space for me, even when distance encroached. . Now, I am a researcher leading the UCSF GRACE Initiative, studying the effects of trauma on health. I see tragic events unfolding around the world, and millions of families and children displaced by war and poverty. I wonder, what kind of future is awaiting those refugee children going through the horror of war and violence? Is there hope for them? . I believe the answer is “yes.” . It's true that childhood traumatic events drastically affect the human mind and body — not just immediately after the trauma, but into and through adulthood. But we can prevent many hard-to-treat diseases by doing what my parents did for me. The safe and supportive home environment of my childhood protects me even now.
