UCSF Health Services Continue During One-Day Strike
Labor action is expected to have limited impact on patient care.
UC San Francisco received a strike notice from the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). The one-day strike is planned for July 25 and will be the fifth strike by the union since November 2024. Bargaining between the University of California and AFSCME began in January 2024.
UCSF Health will continue regular operations, including emergency and scheduled care, and will maintain the majority of scheduled appointments and surgeries. Planning is also underway to address potential impacts on dental clinics, UCSF’s research and education missions, and facilities and transportation operations. Patients whose care may be impacted or rescheduled are being contacted directly by their clinic or care team. Patients with general questions or concerns may reach out to Patient Relations.
Employees represented by AFSCME perform roles at UCSF Campus, UCSF Health’s hospitals and clinics, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG), and UCSF Fresno.
AFSCME represents approximately 5,700 employees who work as phlebotomists, respiratory therapists, medical assistants, licensed vocational nurses, hospital assistants, telemetry monitor technicians, patient care assistants, pharmacy technicians, hospital lab technicians, custodians, shuttle drivers, medical center security officers, and food service workers. The university does not yet know how many AFSCME members will choose to participate in the strike.
