Open Enrollment for 2018 Health Plans, Benefits Runs Through Nov. 21

By Susan Forstat

Open Enrollment is the time of year when University of California employees have the opportunity to make changes to their benefits. It’s a good time to consider any potential changes to your personal situation that might impact your health plan choices, review your options and make any needed changes.

Open Enrollment begins at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 26, and runs through 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 21. Any changes made during Open Enrollment are effective Jan. 1, 2018.

Open Enrollment Highlights for 2018

For 2018, most faculty and staff will see medical plan premium increases of less than $10 a month across all salary bands and coverage levels. Premium increases for UC Care will be a little higher, ranging from $17 to $53 a month.

Beginning in 2018, there will be a new pharmacy benefits administrator for UC’s preferred provider organization (PPO) plans. Anthem Blue Cross will replace OptumRx as the pharmacy administrator. UC is working to minimize the disruption to impacted employees and will communicate directly with impacted members to ensure a smooth transition. Check out the new UC PPO website for all of the Anthem PPO plans (UC Care, Core, and UC Health Savings Plan), which replaces the current Anthem website.

The ARAG legal plan is open for enrollment with additional coverage for family law and real estate issues.

For Flexible Spending Accounts for Health and Dependent Care, you must re-enroll if you want the account for 2018. Please also keep in mind that Dependent Care is for eligible expenses to care for a child or adult dependent. A Health FSA covers eligible health expenses for you and your eligible dependents.

Canopy Health continues as an option for UC employees and their families. You can attend one of the Special Canopy Health Information Events to speak with representatives from Canopy Health and Health Net Blue & Gold, UCSF Primary Care Services and One Medical to learn about Canopy Health and your primary care options. The events will be held:

  • Tuesday, Oct. 31: Parnassus, Medical Sciences Lobby, Noon – 1:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, Nov. 9: Mission Bay Hospital, A1601, Noon – 1:30 p.m.
