UCSF Chancellor Speaks About Future of American Health Care

From precision medicine to the thriving bioscience hub at Mission Bay, UCSF Chancellor Susan Desmond-Hellmann, MD, MPH, discussed the University's work toward advancing health worldwide in a wide-ranging interview with KCBS.

Desmond-Hellmann was the featured guest in the Jan. 18 edition of "KCBS In Depth" on the topic of the future of American health care. During the 40-minute interview, she spoke about the impact of the Affordable Care Act on patient care and how UCSF is working to help bring down the cost of health care.

The chancellor looked back at recent successes for UCSF, including last November's passage of Proposition 30 – which raised taxes to avert deep cuts to state education and, she said, allows the University to go from "crisis mode to future planning mode" – and this year's 10-year anniversary of the Mission Bay campus.

Desmond-Hellmanm also addressed her vision for how precision medicine will revolutionize U.S. health care and UCSF's effort to drive that revolution by convening the nation's foremost thought leaders for the OME Precision Medicine Summit in May.
