Parnassus Avenue Repaving Project Moves to UCSF Campus

July will be an active month for the City’s repaving project for Parnassus Avenue as the work moves through the portions of street most densely used by UCSF staff, students, faculty, researchers and patients, according to Maric Munn, director of Campus Facilities Management at UCSF.

"We have been holding weekly coordination meetings since project initiation and are doing our best to mitigate concerns while this project is under construction," said Munn.

Here are some updates since the last communication:

  • Curb ramp work has been completed in the main campus area and is heading east.
  • Digging up the street and pouring the concrete base has moved from 5th Avenue up to Third Avenue and is heading east through the most densely populated area of UCSF campus. The work is expected to be through the main campus areas by the end of July.
  • Asphalt work will follow concrete base work. Due to concerns raised about odors, the City has agreed to perform all asphalt work on the weekends.

What the UCSF community can expect:

  • One lane of Parnassus Avenue will be kept open as work progresses. Flaggers will direct traffic. Emergency vehicles will be given priority access.  Expect delays and if all possible, use a different route to avoid Parnassus Avenue.
  • Muni bus stops and UCSF shuttle stops will be moved temporarily as work progresses in the transit stop areas. Please watch for signs redirecting riders to the temporary stop locations which will be as nearby the current stops as possible.
  • Current crosswalk locations will be closed while work is being done on them. Temporary crosswalks with wheelchair accessibility will be provided nearby. Please keep an eye out for these temporary crosswalk locations and use them when crossing Parnassus.
  • The entrance to the Millberry/Ambulatory Care Center parking garages on Parnassus will be closed to vehicle traffic one weekend and the exit another weekend. Parking entrance and exit will continue to be provided off of Irving Street and signage will direct parking lot users how to enter and exit.
  • The entrance and exit to UCSF Medical Center's Emergency Room drop off/parking area will be affected, but one driveway will remain open at all times. Emergency vehicles and patient emergency room drop off/pickup will have access and be directed as to which driveway to use.
