UCSF Police Inform Campus About World Laboratory Animal Liberation Week: April 21-29

The UCSF Police Department would like to inform members of the UCSF community that April 21 through April 29, 2012, has been designated as World Laboratory Animal Liberation Week.

In the past, Animal Extremist Groups have held events to draw media attention to the issue of primates in research. These events included news conferences, holding signs up to passing motorists and setting up tables on public areas near primate research institutions on the Parnassus campus.

At this time, there are no events scheduled to take place on or near UCSF campuses. The UCSF Police Department continues to monitor sources for new intelligence and updates.

Faculty, staff and students who have any questions regarding this issue are asked to please call the UCSF Police Department Investigations Unit at 415/476-5174.

Personal Protection Strategies:

  • Ensure all work areas are appropriately secured and locked down before leaving the area.
  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Contact the Police Department regarding any suspicious persons or activities near your residence or workplace.
  • Never open your residential, office or laboratory door without knowing who is on the other side.
  • If someone comes to your laboratory, home or office stating that he/she is a police officer, utility company worker, etc., ask to see identification.
  • If you are unsure, call the agency that they reportedly represent and verify their identity.
  • Do not touch any suspicious packages and report them immediately to the UCSF Police Department at 9-911 while on campus, or your local law enforcement agency, if at home.
  • Immediately report all suspicious inquiries about animal research or inquiries about locations of research facilities to the UCSF Police Department.
  • Immediately report suspicious people loitering around animal care facilities and/or taking photographs of the area to the UCSF Police.
