Media Advisory: UCSF to Host Symposium on Tobacco Research

WHAT: A UCSF symposium, “It’s About a Billion Lives,’’ will feature new research on tobacco. A wide range of topics will be presented including discussions about the harmful effects of cigarette smoke exposure, the public health consequences of “electronic’’ cigarettes, and how discount pricing of cigarettes has raised smoking rates among poor people in China. The event is hosted by UCSF’s Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education. 

WHEN: Friday, Feb. 3, 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

WHO:  The featured speakers and their topics include:

  • “How Much Longer Until We Get There?” Ursula Bauer, PhD, MPH, director of the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion at the Centers for Disease Control;
  • “Smoking Revolution? Electronic Cigarettes and Public Health’’ Rachel Grana, PhD, MPH, postdoctoral fellow at the UCSF Cardiovascular Research Institute;
  • “What Will Happen to Health Care Costs if We Pass the California Cancer Research Act…And If We Don’t’’ James Lightwood, PhD, associate adjunct professor of clinical pharmacy at UCSF;
  • “Price Discounting Keeps Poor People Buying Cigarettes in China’’ Tingting Yao, PhD, postdoctoral fellow at the Cardiovascular Research Institute
  • “Smoke Gets in Your ICU: Cigarette Smoke Exposure and Critical Illness’’ Carolyn Calfee, MD, assistant professor in residence;
