UCSF Series of Forums on Publishing, Research Funding

Starting Wednesday (Feb. 22), the Chancellor’s Council on Faculty Life (CCFL) and the Library are sponsoring a series of events focused on open access publishing, research funding, and getting published in scholarly journals.
Research and publication are core tenets of life at UCSF, and these presentations aim to engage and help faculty, students, and researchers navigate the often complicated path to publishing.
The first event, “Open Access: a New Era in Publishing,” event will feature three speakers with substantial knowledge of the open access publishing movement and its implications for academic institutions:
- Peter Binfield, PhD, Public Library of Science, publisher, PLoS One and the Community Journals
- Karen Butter, ML, University Librarian and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Library Services & Instructional Technology and
- Rich Schneider, PhD, Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and COLASC Chair
The panel event will be moderated by David Teitel, MD, professor and medical director of the Pediatric Heart Center.
Speakers will address the open access publishing model – how it works, what it costs, how it affects academic promotion, what open peer review means, and what UCSF is doing to promote an open access mandate. “Open Access” to information — the free, immediate, online access to the results of scholarly research, and the right to use and re-use those results as needed – has the power to transform the way research and scientific inquiry results are shared. Open Access is championed by scholars such as UCSF Nobel laureate Harold Varmus, MD, now director of the National Cancer Institute.

Next Wednesday, join the director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) for a candid discussion on National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding. Martha J. Somerman, DDS, PhD will present “Accelerating Gains in Oral Health through Research and Innovation.” Somerman has been director of the NIDCR since August 2011. Prior to becoming NIDCR director, she was dean of the School of Dentistry at the University of Washington. Having received her first NIH grant in 1987, Somerman has significant expertise and experience to share on the subject of applying for – and being awarded - research grants.
