UCSF Releases Second Version of Mobile App for Information to Go
The second version of UCSF's mobile app, UCSF Mobile 2.0, is now available for people on the go.
The University has improved upon is first mobile app, which launched last August and has been downloaded by more than 5,000 members of the UCSF community. The app, which is designed for a general audience to connect people to the latest UCSF news, as well as shuttle schedules, campus maps and more.
The free app, which is available in the Android Market and Apple App Store, both accessed from mobile devices, is intended for the public, patients and their families, and UCSF students, faculty, staff, alumni and business partners. Please note that current iPhone UCSF Mobile 1.0 users can receive the new version via an update. Android UCSF Mobile 1.0 users should uninstall their current version before navigating to the Android Marketplace and installing UCSF Mobile 2.0. Future upgrades on the Android platform will not require this extra step.
UCSF Mobile 2.0 now covers nine categories: campus shuttle, directory, fitness, maps, library, events, news, emergency contacts and UCSF's social media feeds via Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.
The apps' maps feature has added Google Streetview and maps of Mount Zion and San Francisco General Hospital campuses to the maps of Parnassus Heights and Mission Bay campuses. Among other enhanced features of version two of UCSF's mobile app:
- Shuttle information: Offers new trip planner
- Directory: Add research interests to faculty along with their publications, photo and link to UCSF Profiles
- Calendars: Includes academic events
Upon the release of UCSF's Mobile 1.0, Opinder Bawa, UCSF's chief technology officer and executive director of ITS, called it a "foundational stone." Mobile UCSF is a precursor to a larger mobile health initiative to bring health care directly to patients and research participants. A future app, for example, will allow participants in research studies to fill out data on their mobile devices every day and transmit it easily and securely, giving researchers real-time access to that information.
UCSF's mobile app is a joint project of ITS, University Relations and the UCSF Library & Center for Knowledge Management in collaboration with Transporation Services, Campus Life Services, Campus Planning, the Clinical and Translational Science Institute. It is powered by the UCLA Mobile Web Framework.
