UCSF Celebrates Diversity Month with Variety of Events

Faculty, staff, students and trainees are welcome to celebrate the many differences among us as UCSF celebrates diversity with an art show, a symposium focusing on health disparities and a screening of the Disney animated movie “The Princess and the Frog.”
Here’s a summary of the upcoming events:
Today through October 8
The 22nd Annual Faculty and Staff Art Show is open for viewing through Thursday, Oct. 8, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Millberry Union Conference Center on the Parnassus campus. Presented by the Visual Arts Club at UCSF and Arts & Events present, the art show is open to the public. This year’s theme is “Origins.”
On Wednesday, Oct. 6 at noon Deborah Tash will share her
perspective on art appreciation and on Thursday, Oct. 7 at noon David Hand will talk about photographing people.
October 11
The Minority Graduate Student Organization in conjunction with the Graduate Division will present the movie “The Princess and the Frog,” featuring Disney’s first animated African-American princess, on Monday, Oct. 11 at 5:30 p.m. in the Genentech Hall Auditorium on the UCSF Mission Bay campus. Families are welcome.
Also on Oct. 11, UCSF’s office of Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity and Diversity will host the Diversity Best Practices Luncheon. This invitation-only event will run from noon to 2 p.m. at the Millberry Union Gymnasium on the Parnassus campus.
Marie-Theresa Hernández
October 12
Marie-Theresa Hernández, professor of World Cultures and Literature in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages at the University of Houston, will present a lecture titled “Popular Culture and Identity formation: How Movies Affect the Way We See the World,” on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at 11 a.m. in Rock Hall Auditorium at UCSF Mission Bay.
Hernández has taught courses on narrative and ethnography, Mexican-American literature, critical theory, and a course on gender, nation, and religion titled “Malinche and Guadalupe.”
October 14
On Thursday, Oct. 14, San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) will present the documentary film, “Not in Our Town,” from noon to 1 p.m., in Carr Auditorium at the SFGH campus.
“Not in Our Town” is a national movement that encourages community response to hate crimes. The project combines PBS broadcast, grassroots events, educational outreach and online activities to help communities battling hate talk to learn from each other. Since 1995, “Not in Our Town” has chronicled positive community organizing stories and provided practical tools to stimulate dialogue.
October 18
Sergio Aguilar-Gaxiola, MD, PhD, professor of internal medicine at UC Davis, will present “Physical-Mental Comorbidities: The Case for Integration of Behavioral Health and Primary Care,” from 10 a.m. to noon, Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute, room LP 460.
Interested attendees are asked to please RSVP by Monday, Oct. 11 to Patty Gallagher. This lecture is jointly sponsored by the Clinical Services Research Training Program and the NIMH community Academic Training Alliance fellowship program.
October 19
Sergio Aguilar-Gaxiola, MD, PhD, professor of internal medicine at UC Davis, will present a clinical case consultation from 9 to 11 a.m. at SFGH in room 7E2 and a trainee case presentation from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Teak Room. These presentations are sponsored by the Department of Psychiatry Diversity Committee.
October 21
On Thursday, Oct. 21 UCSF will present “The New Faces of America” by Will & Company, from noon to 1:05 p.m., in the Millberry Union Conference Center on the Parnassus campus.
The second in a series of one-person shows presented by Will & Company, “The New Faces of America” uses the original format to present stories which stretch the issue of diversity to include social topics as well as multicultural ideas. Like its predecessor, this is a 65-minute, one woman show presenting characters taken from real interviews of seven incredibly different backgrounds. October 22
The Fourth Annual Health Disparities Research Symposium will be held on Friday, Oct. 22, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Laurel Heights Conference Center. The event will showcase research through nine oral and 30 poster presentations at the Laurel Heights Conference Center.
The keynote speaker is William Vega, PhD, Provost Professor at the University of Southern California, who holds appointments in Social Work, Preventive Medicine, Psychiatry, and Family Medicine. Vega is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine, National Academies of Science, and Emeritus Professor at UC Berkeley. His specialty is multicultural epidemiologic and services research with adolescents and adults, work that has been funded by multiple public and private sources.
October 28
UCSF’s University Community Partnerships (UCP) Office and Chancellor Sue Desmond-Hellmann will join San Francisco community leaders to celebrate their shared partnerships at UCP’s Second Annual Partnerships and Celebration. This event acknowledges and honors the partnerships between local communities and UCSF faculty, staff and students who are working together to improve the health of San Franciscans.
This event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Fisher Banquet Room at the Mission Bay Conference Center.
