UCSF to Host Faculty Development Day on September 23
Faculty are invited to attend Faculty Development Day on September 23, when they will have an opportunity to network with colleagues, learn about topics to enhance their work life and enjoy lunch, like these faculty members did last year.
All UCSF faculty are invited to attend Faculty Development Day, a one-day event offering workshops and resources to build and enhance faculty life at UCSF.
The event is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 23, from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., at the Laurel Heights Conference Center. For more information and to register online for Faculty Development Day, visit the Academic Affairs website.
Formerly called Faculty Information & Welcoming Week, Faculty Development Day 2010 marks the fifth year the Chancellor’s Council on Faculty Life (CCFL) and the Office of Academic Affairs and Faculty Development and Advancement has sponsored this event. It is one of several ongoing programs designed to create a supportive work environment, one of seven directions outlined in the UCSF Strategic Plan.
This year’s workshops have been developed to be more relevant to faculty at all career stages. The workshop “Getting the Most out of Your Mentoring Relationships” will help mentees as well as those transitioning to a mentor role. The workshseveralop “Refining Your Skills as a Highly Effective Teacher” will include strategies beginning and experienced teachers can use to enhance their skills.
“We’ve found that in past Faculty Information and Welcoming Week events, a handful of experienced faculty attend each session and find much of the information very relevant to them,” says Vice Provost Sally Marshall, chair of CCFL. “At every career stage, many of us have questions about negotiation, advancement, mentoring, diversity, and other topics, and Faculty Development Day will be a great way to get answers to those questions.”
Making People a Top Priority
Faculty Development Day will begin with opening remarks by Chancellor Sue Desmond-Hellmann, MD, MPH, and Vice Provost Sally Marshall.
One of Desmond-Hellmann’s five key priorities is “People” – striving to recruit and retain the very best employees, ensuring everyone is connected to the University’s mission and cultivating strong and capable managers. Creating a more supportive work environment for faculty is critical to faculty recruitment and retention, a particularly critical issue in the current economic times.
The workshops “Faculty Compensation & Benefits” and “Faculty Advancement & Promotion” will be offered first, followed by a networking luncheon with campus leaders and Informational Kiosks. The afternoon is devoted to new and updated workshops.
Also new this year, informational kiosks staffed with representatives from numerous organization and initiatives at UCSF, will provide faculty with a chance to meet staff, ask questions, hear answers to their colleagues’ questions, or pick up a flyer about programs of interest.
