UCSF Chancellor to Present Top Fundraising AIDS Walk Team with Trophy

The UCSF team that raises the most money per person in AIDS Walk San Francisco will be treated to a casual reception with UCSF Chancellor Sue Desmond-Hellmann, MD, MPH, who will offer her congratulations and present a new trophy.

Slated for Sunday, July 18, AIDS Walk San Francisco is a 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) event that benefits the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, which awards grants to HIV/AIDS organizations serving six Bay Area counties. Several UCSF programs are beneficiaries.

UCSF faculty, staff, students and trainees and their friends and families are encouraged to register for AIDS Walk San Francisco in Golden Gate Park or contribute funds to someone who already is part of the growing UCSF contingent. To date, UCSF has 13 teams competing in a friendly campuswide competition for a new trophy and a chance to chat with the chancellor at a reception.

Chancellor Desmond-Hellmann will celebrate with the AIDS Walk team that raises the most money per person during a trophy presentation on Tuesday, Aug. 3 from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Mission Bay Pub. The afternoon event will feature refreshments.

“The UCSF AIDS Walk Steering Committee is pleased that the chancellor will be taking time out from her busy schedule to recognize members of the community who participated in AIDS Walk San Francisco,” said Jennifer Mannix, co-chair of the steering committee and manager of Arts & Events.

This year, the steering committee has set a goal of raising a combined total of $45,000. Last year, due to the sagging economy, UCSF raised about $37,000, but still managed to finish in the event’s top 10 fundraising teams. But time is running out to reach that goal.

As of June 24, all UCSF teams, including the one based at San Francisco General Hospital, have raised nearly $16,000. To sign up for a team go here  and check out the fundraising statistics, go here.

All those who raise or contribute at least $25 for AIDS Walk San Francisco will receive a UCSF team T-shirt to wear at the event and all year long. For a look at the T-shirts from the past 15 years of walks, check out the display window at the Medical Sciences Building on the Parnassus campus.

Free Food at AIDS Walk

Everyone who participates in AIDS Walk San Francisco or volunteers at the UCSF station in Sharon Meadow on July 18, will also enjoy a free catered breakfast by Peasant Pies and free catered lunch by Panini Time. Special thanks to Panini Time, which is generously donating 50 of the lunches.

For breakfast, Peasant Pies, a Mission Bay campus vendor, will offer two choices of pies: ham, cheese and eggs and spinach and feta cheese, in addition to coffee and tea, whole fruit and beverages.

For lunch, Panini Time will offer the Sonoma Box Lunch, which includes freshly made sandwiches, chips and a cookie. Sandwich choices are: mesquite turkey on scallion foccocia bread, a Florentine wrap or chicken Athena, a Greek-themed sandwich of grilled chicken, feta cheese and cucumbers on artichoke foccocia bread.

Eateries to Donate on June 30

And for those members of the campus community who may be on vacation or out of town on July 18, here is another way to help raise funds for AIDS Walk San Francisco. On Wednesday, June 30, buy lunch at one of the following UCSF eateries, which will be donating 5 percent of their proceeds to the fundraiser.
