UC Mandates Ethical Values and Conduct Training
The University of California, Office of the President (UCOP) is requiring all campuses to implement an ethics training program for all employees.
This training program is designed to:
- Raise continued awareness of the University of California Statement of Ethical Values and Standards of Ethical Conduct
- Convey University employment obligations with respect to ethical and compliant behavior and
- Familiarize UC employees with important ethics and compliance information, issues and resources.
“Members of the University of California community are committed to the highest ethical standards in furtherance of our mission of teaching, research and public service,” the statement reads. “We recognize that we hold the University in trust for the people of California.”

By Dec. 31, 2010, all employees must take one of the following training briefings: UC Ethical Values and Conduct and Conflicts of Interest for Researchers or Compliance Briefing: UC Ethical Values and Conduct.
The first training, UC Ethical Values and Conduct and Conflicts of Interest for Researchers, intended for campus employees who conduct research, was rolled out in October 2009.
UCOP rolled out the second training, Compliance Briefing: UC Ethical Values and Conduct, intended for all non-research staff, on Feb. 17.
Employees who have taken the first mandatory training class do not need to take the second one.
Training delivery can be customized and is available online through the UCSF Learning Center, in person by an instructor in a training session or presented at unit/department staff meetings.
Employees who have a UCSF email account will be notified by UCOP with the training link. However, managers and supervisor with staff who do not have an email account, should use UCOP’s course materials which are available at http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/compaudit/ to provide the training at staff meetings.
