Walter Newman, San Francisco community leader, joins NCIRE board

Walter S. Newman, a leading San Francisco businessman, philanthropist, and community leader, has joined the Board of Directors of NCIRE-The Veterans Health Research Institute.
 
The announcement was made by Board chairman Paul Volberding, MD. “We are thrilled that Mr. Newman has agreed to join the Board,” said Volberding. “Walter has supported NCIRE as a valued advisor for many years, and now as a Board member, he will have an even greater opportunity to contribute to our mission of advancing Veterans health through research.”
 
In San Francisco, Newman has served as head of the Planning Commission, the Redevelopment Commission, and the Fine Arts Museums, among many other public service leadership positions. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the University of California, San Francisco, and for over 20 years has been a public member of the UCSF Conflict of Interest Committee. Following the death of his son Bob from a malignant brain tumor, Newman co-founded and became President of the National Brain Tumor Foundation, which has helped thousands of sufferers of this dread disease.
 
As a US Army Infantry Captain in World War II, Newman received a Purple Heart for wounds sustained in the European campaign following the Normandy invasion. In 2009, he was inducted as a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur, the highest distinction bestowed by the nation of France. Newman, a third generation San Franciscan, has been married to Ellen Magnin Newman for 60 years, with two sons. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley.
 
NCIRE-The Veterans Health Research Institute - is a self-funded private nonprofit research institute, established to administer health research at San Francisco Veteran's Affairs Medical Center. It is the largest research institute associated with a VA medical center in the United States. NCIRE’s mission is to advance veterans health through research.
