Senator Arlen Specter to hold town hall meeting at UCSF

WHAT:
Senator Arlen Specter (D-PA) will join UCSF Chancellor Susan Desmond- Hellmann for a town hall meeting with UCSF faculty, staff, and students.

The Senator will make a 10-minute presentation, touching on the national health care debate, the role of academic medical centers in the health enterprise and the importance of NIH-sponsored basic and translational research. The remainder of the hour will be Q&A with the audience, followed by a 15-minute Q&A with media.

WHY:
Senator Specter has been a great champion for the NIH. He is responsible for the $10.4 billion Recovery Act allocation to NIH for fiscal 2009-2010. UCSF is the second largest recipient of funding from the NIH in the nation.

Academic medical centers like UCSF are turning NIH funds into treatments and new technologies to improve care for patients, and facilitating basic research. The town hall provides an opportunity to see the intersection between what happens in Washington, DC and the issues of importance to the UCSF health sciences audience.
