Chancellor Names Senior Vice Chancellor, Finance and Administration, Pending Approval by Regents

John Plotts, who currently serves as assistant vice president of financial management at the UC Office of the President (UCOP), has been named senior vice chancellor of Finance and Administration at UCSF, pending approval by the UC Board of Regents.

In her announcement today, UCSF Chancellor Sue Desmond-Hellmann, MD, MPH, said that Plotts has “extensive financial and operational experience, in addition to an in depth knowledge of the University of California system, which make him extremely well suited for the UCSF senior vice chancellor position.”

As senior vice chancellor, Plotts will report directly to the chancellor. He will begin his new role as soon as possible following the January 2010 Regents’ meeting with consideration of the need to provide a suitable transition at UCOP.

Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce that, following a national search, Mr. John Plotts has accepted the position of senior vice chancellor—finance and administration subject to approval by The Regents.  Mr. Plotts, who currently serves as assistant vice president of financial management at UCOP, has extensive financial and operational experience, in addition to an in depth knowledge of the University of California system, which make him extremely well suited for the UCSF senior vice chancellor position.

Mr. Plotts has a financial and operations career spanning over thirty years, thirteen of which have been devoted to UC. During his tenure with UCOP, he has been directly responsible for the financial and business strategies in the areas of financial accounting and reporting for the University, academic medical centers, endowments and investments, federal costing policy and overhead proposals, federal taxes, and employee benefits/retirement system financial services.  Prior to Mr. Plotts’ employment with UC, his previous roles include vice president and chief financial officer at Home Express, Inc. and senior vice president, administration, Northern California Division of Lucky Stores, Inc.

For a year and half, the campus has been operating with an interim organization structure that divided on a temporary basis responsibilities for oversight of various aspects of the Financial and Administrative Services (FAS) organization.  With this appointment, FAS will be united again under one senior leader. 

As senior vice chancellor, Mr. Plotts will report directly to me.  He will begin his new role as soon as possible following the January 2010 Regents’ meeting with consideration of the need to provide a suitable transition at the Office of the President.
