UCSF’s Osher Center for Integrative Medicine is currently registering participants for a daylong conference on stress and coping.

The “State of the Science of Stress and Coping” conference will take place on Friday, Sept. 11, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at UCSF’s Laurel Heights Conference Center.

The event will feature a host of thought leaders and scholars from around the country as well as Canada and The Netherlands. Speakers will explore topics ranging from “Gender and Coping,” to the “Spiritual Dimensions of Coping,” to “Genetic Testing and the Proactive Management of the Familial Cancer Risk.”

The conference also will pay tribute to Osher Center Director Susan Folkman, PhD, Osher Foundation Distinguished Professor of Integrative Medicine who is retiring after 30 years of service to the University. Folkman is an internationally recognized expert in the field of psychological stress and coping. For the past 20 years, her work has focused on stress and coping in the context of HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses, with a particular emphasis on caregiving and bereavement.

Since 1990, Folkman has also been professor of medicine at UCSF, and from 1994 until 2001, she was co-director of the UCSF Center for AIDS Prevention Studies. Folkman received her PhD from the University of California at Berkeley in 1979, where she remained until coming to UCSF.

The conference was organized by UCSF associate professor and social psychologist Judith Moskowitz, PhD, MPH, and Nancy Adler, PhD, a professor and vice chair in the UCSF Department of Psychiatry.
