Campus Works to Address Implementation of Furlough Plan
UCSF leaders are considering how to implement the furlough plan recently approved by UC Regents to help solve an anticipated $813 million reduction in state financial support, according to Eugene Washington, MD, executive vice chancellor and provost.
In an email sent to the campus community on July 30, Washington said that campus leaders are consulting with the UC Office of the President and are looking at “how best to manage the core university activities that are supported by non-state funds, such as clinical care and research.”
Here is the entire letter from Washington:
July 30, 2009
Dear Colleagues:
Our campus leaders, including the chancellor, vice chancellors, deans and medical center chief executive officer, are aware that faculty and staff have many questions about the system-wide furlough plan the University of California Regents approved in July and how it will be implemented. In consultation with the UC Office of the President, we are actively pursuing answers to these questions, and developing a process to implement the furloughs and address issues particular to our campus. I invite you to direct specific questions that you would like addressed in our upcoming campus’ Question & Answer materials via email to [email protected].
The furlough plan adopted by the Regents was proposed by UC President Mark G. Yudof as one of many actions UC is taking to offset an anticipated $813 million reduction in state financial support due to the state budget crisis. Among the challenging issues we are addressing in implementing the furlough plan is how best to manage the core university activities that are supported by non-state funds, such as clinical care and research. As we seek solutions, please be assured that we are working to resolve such issues in a prudent and equitable manner.
In the weeks ahead, you will receive ongoing communications about UCSF’s furlough implementation plans. I know I speak on behalf of UCSF’s entire senior leadership group when I say that we recognize the imperative of providing the campus community with details on how furloughs will be implemented here as expeditiously as possible. You have our commitment to continue working diligently to achieve this important goal.
Sincerely,
A. Eugene Washington, M.D.
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
