UC President Announces Appointment of Candidate for UCSF Chancellor

UCSF-trained physician Susan Desmond-Hellmann, MD, MPH, a distinguished leader in cancer research, biotechnology business executive and Bay Area native, will be the first woman to serve as UCSF chancellor, if approved by the UC Regents next week.
UC President Mark Yudof announced the appointment of Desmond-Hellmann in a news release today (May 1).
The news release is posted on the UCSF News Services website.
In a message to the campus community today, Chancellor Mike Bishop, MD, says he supports the recommendation.
“I endorse this recommendation with enthusiasm and will do all that I can to facilitate the transition to new leadership for the campus,” Bishop noted. “We can all be grateful that the President and the Search Committee have identified a truly outstanding individual to lead UCSF in the coming years.”
In anticipation of welcoming UCSF’s next chancellor on campus next week, Bishop said a campus event is scheduled for Friday, May 8 from 9 to 10 a.m. in Cole Hall on the Parnassus campus. A simulcast will be available at other locations. Further details will be provided next week.
