CTSI Symposium to Highlight Research That Engages Communities

The UCSF Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) invites the campus community to a symposium, titled “Effecting Change in Health and Health Care: The Power of Community-Engaged Research.” The symposium is scheduled for Friday, March 13, from noon to 4 p.m. in Carr Auditorium at San Francisco General Hospital. The symposium features a plenary lecture, titled “The Meaning of Translational Research and Why It Matters,” by Steven Woolf, MD, MPH, professor in the departments of family medicine and epidemiology and community health at Virginia Commonwealth University. He is this year’s UCSF Robert Crede Visiting Primary Care Professor. The title of his talk is taken from a commentary Woolf published last year in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Translational research implies more than using knowledge gained through fundamental research to invent new drugs and health care procedures and to endorse them or commercialize them for medical practice, Woolf argues. Translational research also refers to studies that aim to identify better ways to promote the adaptation of public health and medical best practices. Too few resources are dedicated to this mode of translational research, according to Woolf. For example, this type of research includes studies to implement programs for improving compliance with existing cancer screening guidelines, which, if successful, would likely result in fewer cancer-related deaths. The symposium speakers will highlight several San Francisco Bay Area research partnerships seeking to ensure that more patients benefit from the best health care practices available.
