New Online Course Offers Safety Tips for Active Shooter Scenario

By Robin Hindery

The UCSF Police Department has launched a new online course to educate students, faculty and staff about what to do if there is an active shooter on campus. Campus police officers have conducted a live version of the course, “Active Shooter Safety Guidelines,” at various UCSF locations since late July. It focuses on how to develop a “survival mindset” and offers important information about where to seek help in the event of a campus shooting. The Police Department decided to offer similar, web-based instruction for those who couldn’t make the in-person training or wanted to revisit the material, said Susan Bertuleit, the UCSF Police Department’s professional standards analyst. The online course includes a video called “Shots Fired,” which outlines the five steps for survival during a shooting incident: escape, cover, hide, play dead and — as a last resort — attack the attacker. Safety guidelines, a resource pamphlet and an emergency contact list are also available on the course website. Anyone with a University ID number can sign up for the course through the UCSF online course management system. To set up an account, go to the GALEN Accounts webpage. If you have a GALEN login name and password, go to the UCSF Online Learning Environment login webpage. Once logged in, choose “add course” and select “Active Shooter Safety Guidelines” from the Staff Training category. The UCSF Police Department is offering three upcoming, in-person “Active Shooter” training sessions: • Tuesday, Dec. 9, noon to 1 p.m., Chancellor’s Conference Room, Laurel Heights campus • Wednesday, Jan. 14, noon to 1 p.m., Herbst Hall, Mount Zion campus • Thursday, Feb. 19, noon to 1 p.m., 2300 Harrison St., room 368
