During the 2006-2007 fiscal year, UCSF's total operating budget exceeded $2.5 billion, more than twice the size of the budget a decade ago.
The growth has been fueled by a diversified revenue stream that includes, but is not limited to:
* government grants and contracts (21 percent)
* general funds and fees (14 percent)
* private support (11 percent)
* sales and services, the lion's share of the latter coming from UCSF Medical Center activities (54 percent).
Over the past five years and across these four categories, UCSF has benefited from growth in three of the four areas. In fact, on a non-inflationary adjusted basis, only general funds and fees have decreased.
The fastest growing area is private support, which has increased by 68 percent since 2002. See [private support](http://budget.ucsf.edu/images/stories/private-support.png) graphic.
All funds in some way support UCSF's fourfold mission of teaching, research, patient care and public service.
On the expense side of the budget for fiscal year 2006-2007, 49 percent of the budget goes to operate and support UCSF Medical Center. Research expenditures total 23 percent of the budget, academic support accounts for 10 percent and instruction costs total 7 percent.
