Dean of Dentistry Search Underway
UCSF School of Nursing Dean Kathleen Dracup, RN, DNSc, is chairing the committee in the search for a new dean of the UCSF School of Dentistry.
The search firm of Isaacson, Miller, was selected through a competitive process to assist with the recruitment. The firm conducts nationwide searches for a wide variety of organizations, including leading universities, research institutes, academic medical centers, foundations, cultural institutions, economic development organizations, human service agencies, and national advocacy groups.
John Featherstone, MSc, PhD, director of the Program in Biomaterials, Biophysical Sciences and Engineering in the Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences, is serving as interim dean until a successor to Charles Bertolami has been recruited. Bertolami, DDS, DMedSc, left UCSF to serve as dean of the New York University College of Dentistry.
The Chancellor's Search Committee for the School of Dentistry Dean is charged with conducting a rigorous, national search for a distinguished academic leader who will excel in this role. For a list of members of the committee,

The campus community is welcome to offer input to the selection committee via email messages sent to Assistant Chancellor Deborah Brennan, who provides staff support to the search committee.
"For the Dean of Dentistry, UCSF seeks a leader who will enhance and strengthen the mission of the school in teaching and research excellence," said Chancellor Mike Bishop, MD, in an email to the campus community. "The successful candidate will have a substantial history of decisive and innovative leadership and a demonstrated commitment to dental education, research and clinical care.
"Additional requirements are the ability to identify and address the challenges facing dental education and to provide a vision for the future progress of the school. Responsibilities include identifying priorities and the allocation of resources to meet those priorities, as well as cultivating and enhancing relationships with academia, government and industry," Bishop noted.
In addition, UCSF seeks candidates whose experience, teaching, research or community service has prepared them to contribute to the University's commitment to diversity and excellence, Bishop said. UCSF is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer and is strongly committed to diversity; women and minorities are especially encouraged to apply.
Nominees and applicants must hold a DDS, DMD, PhD or other equivalent doctoral degree and demonstrate scholarly distinction appropriate for a tenured appointment in the school. The search will continue until the position is filled.
