The Chancellor's Council on Faculty Life (CCFL) is offering a new Faculty Development Program, which consists of noontime and afternoon lectures.
UC Santa Cruz Professor of Psychology Martin Chemers, PhD, will present the program's inaugural lecture on Tuesday, Dec. 4, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Health Sciences West, room 301, on the Parnassus campus. Refreshments will be served. Chemers' talk is titled "Heavy Mettle: The Role of Confidence and Optimism in Leadership."
The Faculty Development Program is one of the CCFL's initiatives to create a supportive work environment for faculty. Future topics will include negotiation skills, financial management and communications.
Effective leaders must establish credibility, build relationships that motivate and encourage team members, create an environment of fairness, and develop strategies for high-quality decision-making. Chemers will provide an overview of the many facets of leadership and describe the characteristics and behaviors of highly effective leaders. The role of the personal characteristics of confidence and optimism in leadership effectiveness will be discussed. All faculty will benefit from this innovative lecture.
Chemers has served as dean of Social Sciences, interim executive vice chancellor and provost and acting chancellor at UCSC. He is an active researcher and has published many books and articles on leadership, culture and organizational diversity. His popular, practitioner-oriented book.
