UCSF Experts Discuss "Translational Research" for UCSF Foundation Wellness Lecture Series

On Oct. 4, the UCSF Foundation Wellness Lecture Series presented "From Lab Bench to Bedside: Translating Research into Cures." The latest in the series, "From Lab Bench to Bedside" addressed the following questions: What is "translational research"? Why is it so innovative? And why does it hold such promise for accelerating medical discoveries? What does it take to move a research breakthrough from the laboratory to the clinic? How can scientists and physicians work together? What common discoveries do we owe to translational research? To address these issues and to take additional questions from the audience, four UCSF experts joined moderator Jan Yanehiro and Lecture Chair Will Hearst at the UCSF Mission Bay Community Center. The panelists and the topics of their discussions included: "Bridging the Gulf Between Scientific Discovery and Better Health"
Joseph "Mike" McCune, MD, PhD, director of the UCSF Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI)

"Traumatic Brain Injury: Putting the Patient Together Again"
Geoff Manley, MD, PhD, chief of neurotrauma at San Francisco General Hospital and director, UCSF Brain and Spinal Injury Center

"Breakthroughs in Cancer Imaging"
Sarah Nelson, PhD, Margaret Hart Surbeck Distinguished Professor of Advanced Imaging at UCSF

"Clot-Busting: A New Way to Prevent and Treat Heart Attacks"
Shaun Coughlin, MD, PhD, director, UCSF Cardiovascular Research Institute Related Links:
