UCSF Public Affairs Offers Multimedia Segments from Recent Research Perspectives Series Progr

On Thursday, Sept. 27, UCSF Public Affairs hosted "Cutting Both Ways: Inflammation as Cause and Consequence of Disease," the first in the department's Research Perspectives series designed to offer journalists access to the nation's leading scientists in an examination of emerging research fields with great potential for treatments and cures. "Cutting Both Ways" explored the role of inflammation in cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's, heart attack, stroke and other potential killers, and promising therapies that draw on this new understanding. Eight prominent research scientists from UCSF, Harvard Medical School, UC San Diego and Genentech, Inc., spoke during the day's program and took questions from the journalists in attendance. UCSF Chancellor J. Michael Bishop, MD, welcomed journalists to the conference, and Lewis Lanier, PhD, provided an overview of the topic and of the day's program. Lanier is American Cancer Society Research Professor, and vice-chair and professor of microbiology and immunology at UCSF. One of the afternoon sessions was led by Jeffrey Bluestone, PhD, director of the UCSF Diabetes Center and A.W. and Mary Margaret Clausen Distinguished Professor in Metabolism and Endocrinology at UCSF, who spoke about "The Impact of Inflammation and Immunity on Diabetes."
