UCSF to Host Eco-Fair at Laurel Heights

UCSF will host an eco-fair consisting of more than 25 organizations and vendors at the Laurel Heights building on Wednesday, Sept. 26. The event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Garden Room and the View, on the second floor at Laurel Heights. Participants will be able to receive free energy-efficient light bulbs from PG&E and raffle tickets for a number of prizes. Those who attend may bring in their used sneakers to get a $10 coupon to Sports Basement. Lunch may be purchased for $5, but meals are free to those who bike to Laurel Heights and bring their helmet to the event. Information will be available on green home products, alternative transportation, less-toxic gardening methods, office products, water and energy conservation, mercury reduction, composting and planet-friendly gift items.

Bay Area environmental organizations will be on hand, as will representatives from the California Academy of Sciences, which will have a booth featuring a skink, a lizard that can be found in a variety of habitats worldwide. Some species are endangered. The event is sponsored by UCSF Transportation Services, Campus Life Services and the Recycling Program of Capital Programs and Facilities Management (CPFM). UCSF is becoming more proactive in its efforts to promote sustainable practices among faculty, staff, students and trainees. The effort has gained momentum in part with the UCSF Sustainability Committee, which is led by Steve Wiesenthal, associate vice chancellor of CPFM and campus architect. The entire UC system also is encouraging green efforts in building renovations, climate protection practices, sustainable operations, recycling and waste management, and environmentally preferable procurement of products.
