UCSF Offers Mediation Training Opportunity
In response to continued interest and numerous requests, the UCSF Work~Life Resource Center will begin training its fourth group of candidates for the Campus Mediation Program.
The Campus Mediation Program, a service of UCSF's Problem Resolution Center, provides an innovative dispute resolution resource to administrators, faculty, staff and students. Mediation offers a neutral, voluntary and confidential process for resolution of workplace conflict and disputes, facilitated by neutral mediators trained through this program. Mediation at UCSF emphasizes open communication and creative problem-solving, and is available in addition to the University's existing formal grievance procedures.
Individuals will be drawn from a broad cross-section of administrators, faculty, staff and students from the campus, schools and medical center.
Selection of individuals will be based upon the following criteria:
* Attendance at a rigorous training program consisting of 35 to 40 hours followed by several half- or full-day advanced sessions throughout the year.
* A willingness to practice co-mediation (team mediation) if called upon to serve as a co-mediator.
* Agreement from one's supervisor approving participation in the training time commitments and subsequent mediations.
* A demonstrated commitment to diversity through personal or professional activities and/or responsibilities.
* Ability to listen and to serve in a neutral capacity.
* Ideally, a commitment of two years' involvement as part of the mediation team.
* A written statement of certification (no more than two pages) responding to each of the above criteria. Supervisor's agreement (included at the end of the candidate's statement or on a separate page) should be demonstrated by a statement of approval, name, title and contact phone number.
Training sessions are scheduled to be held Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 1, 2 and 3, and Thursday and Friday, Nov. 8 and 9. Training will be conducted by Marvin Schwartz, a highly regarded mediator/trainer with more than 25 years of experience in employment mediation at the federal and state levels. The training also satisfies the state-approved criteria for certification to mediate in community-based mediation programs.
Individuals interested in being considered should submit their name, address, phone number, email information and the written statement referred to in the last bullet item above to the Work~Life Resource Center, UCSF Box 1264, or fax 415/502-9675 no later than Friday, Sept. 21.
For more information, contact David Bell, associate campus mediation officer, at 415/514-3226; or Ellen Beilock, campus mediation officer, at 415/502-3272.
