Academic Senate Names Benet as Seventh Annual Distinguished Clinical Research Lecturer
Leslie Z. Benet, PhD, a professor of Biopharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmaceutical Chemistry and co-director of the Drug Studies Unit, is the recipient of the Seventh Annual Distinguished Clinical Research Lectureship for his preeminence in the field of clinical pharmacology.
Benet's research has been patient oriented, combining the tools of analytical chemistry, drug metabolism, pharmacokinetics, cellular and molecular pharmacology to probe mechanisms of drug action and toxicity.
Since 2001, this award has been bestowed on an individual member of the UCSF faculty with outstanding achievements in clinical research. Nominations are made by UCSF faculty, who consider the clinical research contributions of their colleagues and submit nominations for this prestigious award to the Academic Senate Committee on Research. Each year, the Committee on Research selects the recipient of this award.
Benet received AB, BS and MS degrees from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and his PhD from UCSF in 1965. Benet joined the UCSF faculty in 1969. He was elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine of the US National Academy of Sciences in 1987 and has been awarded six honorary doctorates from distinguished universities including Uppsala University, Sweden, Leiden University, The Netherlands and University of Athens, Greece.
Benet is widely respected by UCSF faculty members and students alike - he is an outstanding collaborator, exceptional teacher (Academic Senate Distinguished Teaching Award 1972-73), dedicated mentor (Outstanding Faculty Mentorship Award 2001), and extraordinary clinical scientist. His contributions to both clinical research and education are remarkable.
The campus community is invited to hear Benet talk about his research at the Seventh Annual Distinguished Clinical Research Lecture on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007 at noon p.m. in Cole Hall on the Parnassus Heights campus. The lecture will be broadcast to other UCSF sites as availability permits.
In lieu of a reception following the lecture, and to accommodate the schedules of clinical and other faculty at UCSF, a box lunch will be provided.
