UCSF Nutritionist Participates in KPFA Discussion of US Obesity Rates
KPFA's Peter Laufer addresses a recent study from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health that predicts, based on the current rate of increase in obesity in the U.S., that 75 percent of adults will be overweight by 2015 and 41 percent will be obese. The study also found 66 percent of adults were overweight or obese between 2003 and 2004. Laufer asks, "How do we reconcile our love affair with food and a healthy physique?" Andrea Garber, PhD, RD, joins the program to explore answers to that question. Garber, an assistant professor of pediatrics at UCSF and coordinator for the UCSF pediatric obesity program WATCH (Weight Assessment for Teen and Child Health), is a nutritionist and registered dietitian conducting research on obesity and eating disorders.
