UCSF Blogs: Orthopaedic Surgeon Assists Physicians in Wenzhou, China

An anesthesiologist works with a young patient, who is about to have an extra toe removed from his right foot.

Orthopaedic surgeon Rebecca Yu, MD, blogs from Wenzhou, China, where she and Jonathan Lam, MD, PhD, are assisting physicians at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou through an opportunity with Orthopaedics Overseas/Health Volunteers Overseas. "Overseas volunteering in orthopaedics is an opportunity to teach, learn, and share in a community and a culture other than our own," writes Yu. "I hope this will become a regular part of my practice, as I find it to be one of the most fulfilling experiences I have had, both personally and professionally."

In her "Volunteer Expeditions" blog, Yu, who previously volunteered with Orthopaedics Overseas in Thimphu, Bhutan, chronicles a wide range of experiences, interspersing graphic photos and discussion of injuries and surgical procedures with beautiful images from excursions to restaurants, street markets, parks and officially designated "natural beauty sites" like Yandang Mountain in Zhejiang Province. Yu is clinical instructor in hand surgery at the UCSF/SFGH Orthopaedic Trauma Center. Lam is a 4th year resident in the UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.
