New UCSF Hospital Complex Planned at Mission Bay
In May, the UC Board of Regents is expected to give UCSF Medical Center the approval to begin fundraising for its new hospital at Mission Bay, scheduled to open in 2013. The $1.2 billion hospital complex, part of the UCSF Medical Center, will be among the first in the nation devoted exclusively to the care of women and children, and cancer.
"This is unique in that we are putting three related but separate entities together," said Mark Laret, CEO of UCSF Medical Center. He envisions the new campus as a destination medical center, "like the Mayo Clinic." Laret has garnered help for the ambitious project from San Francisco philanthropist Dede Wilsey, who has committed to bringing in $500 million in private donations for the new hospital.
